A fairly random to-do list for today. Our daily writing will begin with a step towards preparing for our Final Portfolio. We will carry on writing our second genre, and possibly for some of you, move on with our second justifications.

"Preparation" is the watchword of the day!

Reminders

  • Next week is International Education week. Check out the flyer on this page.

  • The events included involve food, music, film, and some discussion panels.

  • Most advisors should start having more openings now that the first round of registration has ended. If you have questions about dropping classes, withdrawing from the university, or things like changing your major, I strongly suggest speaking to your academic advisor.

  • If these folks don't know the answer to the question, they usually can find the folks who do.

  • Friday, November 9th is the last day to drop a class. Remember, this can impact financial aid, so you should reach out to a financial aid advisor, your peer mentor, or your academic advisor with any questions.

  • AND...yes, it is possible to carry on in the Learning Community if you drop a single class, but most (if not all) integrated assignments will still need to be completed as they count in all your other LC courses.

  • As usual, if you have questions, just ask! :)

Today

  • Portfolio Practice

  • Go ahead and pick out a new SLO. One that you didn't discuss during your Midterm Reflective Overview.

  • Follow through with the same "process" that you did in preparing your Midterm.

  • Done correctly, this activity should serve as a solid first draft for one of the SLOs you will include in your final Reflective Overview.

  • While you cannot use all the same SLOs that you discussed in your first RO, you can include evidence from the first half of the semester in your discussion of your new SLOs.

  • Genre #2 Drafting

  • Spend the duration of the class working on your Genre #2. If you have completed this genre skip to the Justification below.

  • Genre #2 Justification

  • What is your second genre?

  • When you discuss the genre/recognizable form you are choosing explain why you are choosing this genre? what does it do for you and your audience? How does it help you achieve your advocacy goals. Furthermore, what are the conventions of the genre and how do you plan on using them.

  • Who is your audience for this genre? Why do they matter?

  • When you say who your audience is explain as much about them as you can. How old are they? How do they get their information on a daily basis? what is their prior knowledge? What will you have to do to understand this group of people in order to communicate with them effectively?

  • What is the delivery system for this genre?

  • In other words, how would you get this genre to your audience in the real world?

  • Are you able to provide research in your genre? Discuss research that you used to support your Genre #2.

  • Also, give a summary of the information you would like to share with this group and why you feel they need to know it? Why is it significant? And, what can your audience do about it?

  • How can speaking to this audience address the need you identified as your focus for the Intersections Project?

Homework

  • Be prepared to share your second genre with the class on Thursday. We will follow the same review process that we did for the first.
