FIGURING IT OUT

These are the answers to just a few of the questions you might have during your time in my class. Please use this FAQ as a general set of guidelines and ALWAYS reach out to me if you have any additional questions about the class, the campus, or the community as a whole. It is my job to help you figure this whole thing out, so I am happy to help in whatever way possible.

Teenage Students Raising Hands

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHO ARE YOU?

My name is Amanda Hartman. I am a wayward English major who realized that health insurance was a good thing. The end. Also, world peace.

WHY AM I HERE?

If you are on this website, you are probably one of my wonderful, prompt and attentive students. This means you could be here for UNIV 1101/1102, ENGL 1302, or possibly a language course from TAMU-CC ISC program. Hopefully, you are here because you are engaging with the class plans, looking up university resources, or because you accessed this page through Blackboard. You might also be a masochist.

WHERE CAN I FIND THE CLASS PLANS FOR CLASS X?

If you look at the top of this page, you will see a drop-down menu called "Class Plans". Hover over that menu and click on the appropriate course. If you choose an incorrect course, you will find the incorrect class plans. If this is all proving too daunting, you can also access my plans on Blackboard. They are linked on the sidebar there, too.

ARE YOU MY ADVISOR?

I am only your academic advisor IF you are a student who has currently enrolled EAP courses through Study Group. That being said, I am happy to answer general questions regarding advising and registration or refer you to the appropriate person.

WHAT IS THE FIRST RULE OF FIGHT CLUB?

I have no idea what you are talking about.

WHAT IS YOUR CLASS POLICY REGARDING X?

Any official rule or policy that is specific to this course can be found in our syllabus which is located on Blackboard. All other general policies can (and should!) be reviewed in your appropriate version of the Student Handbook. I strongly encourage you to review this text as this is the official contract you are entering into with TAMU-CC. It will also help you answer questions you didn't even know you had regarding a variety of issues.

DO YOU EVER CANCEL CLASS?

If for some reason I need to cancel a class for an emergency or illness, I will post an announcement on Blackboard, which should also be visible via your Islander email. If this happens, it is your responsibility to review our class plans for the given day and complete any and all assignments specified therein.

If I cancel a class to do something specific, like hold conferences, attend a university event, etc. there will be clear guidelines and expectations provided for you in advance of that class session. In this instance, class is not "canceled". We are just holding a nontraditional class. Your attendance is still expected.

DO I NEED A BOOK FOR YOUR CLASS?

Check the syllabus.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I HAVE MULTIPLE ABSENCES CAUSED BY A PERSONAL OR MEDICAL ISSUE?

Attendance is an important part of this course and all the courses you take at the university. As such, each of your teachers has their own policies regarding attendance in their courses. I STRONGLY encourage you to be familiar with these policies. They can be located on the course syllabi.

If you find yourself absent from class for multiple consecutive days because of a major life event or a chronic illness, you should reach out to the offices of Student Engagement and Success (SEaS). With the appropriate documentation, these folks can help you reach out to your professors in a formal and appropriate manner regarding whatever issues you are experiencing.

DO I NEED A COMPUTER OR TABLET FOR YOUR COURSE?

The general answer to this question is no; however, if you do not have access to those things or a smartphone, please let me know ASAP, so I can make the appropriate accommodations for this. For the most part, I assume that everyone has access to a piece of tech that can access the internet.

ARE YOU CONSIDERED A CONFIDENTIAL SOURCE ON CAMPUS?

The only people/places on this campus that you should consider confidential are the health and counseling center and the professionals who are employed by them. If you disclose to me verbally or in writing, that you have either been the victim of or committed a crime, I am required by federal law to report this information to the appropriate campus agency.

As a faculty member, my only legal obligation to confidentiality is in my role as your professor. I am not able to discuss your grades or course performance with any outside individuals, including your parents/guardians, unless you have completed the appropriate FERPA documentation.
