Today we will spend a little time "justifying" our choices in regards to Genre #1 before switching over to peer review. Hopefully, everyone has some substantive material for their classmates to work with in regards to answering the questions at the bottom of the page.

If Halloween is over, it can only mean one thing...

Reminder

  • Midterm grades have been submitted. These grades represent a majority of the work in your Midterm Portfolio.

  • Your Midterm Portfolio grading is complete with the exception of the Research Proposal, which will be finalized by Friday.

  • I will post your most current average to BB on Friday evening. If your grade is an "F", this means you either did not complete all the assignments or had major issues with the submitted work.

  • The Midterm Portfolio grade represents 40% of your grade in this course. This means that your Final Portfolio will be worth 60%.

  • Most of you will be registering this evening. I wish you very good luck. Don't forget, you can still meet with your advisors and reschedule classes after your register.

  • You are still completing your Discovery Blogs and GDDs for the second half of the semester. I would encourage you to take these seriously and not fall behind. There have not been very many submissions to these Discussion Boards since you submitted your Midterm Portfolio.

Today

  • Genre #1 Justification

  • What is your first genre?

  • When you discuss the genre/recognizable form you are choosing explain why you are choosing this genre? what does it do for you and your audience? How does it help you achieve your advocacy goals. Furthermore, what are the conventions of the genre and how do you plan on using them.

  • Who is your audience for this genre? Why do they matter?

  • When you say who your audience is explain as much about them as you can. How old are they? How do they get their information on a daily basis? what is their prior knowledge? What will you have to do to understand this group of people in order to communicate with them effectively?

  • What is the delivery system for this genre?

  • In other words, how would you get this genre to your audience in the real world?

  • Are you able to provide research in your genre? Discuss research that you used to support your Genre #1.

  • Also, give a summary of the information you would like to share with this group and why you feel they need to know it? Why is it significant? And, what can your audience do about it?

  • How can speaking to this audience address the need you identified as your focus for the Intersections Project?

  • Peer Review

  • Upload or attach a link in a reply to the Genre Peer Review discussion located under Assignments > Daily Work.

  • Go ahead and partner up.

  • Pick 3 statements from the list below to give feedback on. Copy the questions and respond to the thread of the person you are peer reviewing. Underneath each question, write your response. Include a "because" clause for each response. (The "because" clause ensures that you are making things clear for the original author.)

  • Questions:

1. Who do you think the audience is?

2. Where is the research located in the genre?

3. Does the writer show care for the reader?

4. How is the genre appropriate for meeting the needs of the audience?

5. Where/How does the writer meet requirements of the genre conventions/rules? (think: what we expect from that particular type of writing)

6. In what ways does the writer create knowledge through writing?

7. Do the visuals and conventions match the situation the writer is in?

Homework

  • For this week's GDD, I would like your group to discuss the process you have used to create your first genre, the feedback you received from your peer review, and how you intend to go about finalizing the genre.

  • This is still meant to be a conversation. One of the areas where people lost points on their GDDs was because there was no active conversation between group members.
