Today we will continue with our discussion regarding research that we were not able to finish on Thursday of last week. This is particularly important moving forward with your writing for 1302 and your S&T presentations for this class. In addition, I will try to give you time to begin brainstorming on your next S&T topic: Culture Shock.

Reminder

  • Registration is coming. If you are a one-semester student, you will be registering on your own. The day/time you can officially register is Friday, November 2nd at 12:01 AM.

  • See previous class plans for additional registration information.

  • In addition, I know many of you still need to complete the "Think About It" course online. You must do this before you are able to register.

  • Midterm Grades

  • It is up to you to keep track of your grades in all your courses. For example, your reasonably current grade for this course is available on BB. Other faculty may or may not use BB, but you are still expected to know where you stand in their course.

  • If you are concerned about your grades:

  • Go speak to your faculty. Find out where you are performing poorly and focus the conversation on how you can improve moving forward.

  • Pro tip: Most faculty are willing to help you brainstorm ways to move forward, but these types of conversations are only effective if you have them early on in the semester.

  • Reread your syllabus. Make sure you are familiar with your teachers' grading policies and attendance expectations.

  • Attendance can impact your grade for certain courses.

  • Most importantly, self-reflect. If your grades are not where you would like them, you must determine how you earned those grades. Then, you can evaluate those behaviors and practices and alter them to hopefully achieve better results.

  • This process takes time, and is again, better begun now than waiting for later.

  • Research 101: Some light discussion regarding academic research...

  • Credible vs. Scholarly Sources

  • Credible implies that the text is well researched and relatively unbiased.

  • You can help determine the credibility of a source by using the The CRAAP Test.

  • You can find many different types of credible sources online, but it is important to review them to make sure you are getting legitimate information.

  • Scholarly implies that the article is for use within an academic field and has been peer-reviewed by other scholars with expertise on the subject.

  • ​One way of limiting your online search to scholarly sources only, is to select the "peer-reviewed" limiter on your document search in the library databased.

  • Let's review the concept we are planning to discuss here..

  • First of all, let's define culture shock?

  • Now, let's brainstorm...this is a technique called mind-mapping.

  • You start by putting your central idea in the middle of the paper. You then draw lines out to new bubbles that represent subtopics.

  • Around each subtopic, you gather a variety of information that discusses that particular subtopic.

  • Take a look at the mind map that you have created.

  • Which of your subtopics has the most information?

  • Can you craft a 5-7 minute presentation around that subtopic?

  • What research could you incorporate into this presentation?

  • What visual element will you create to help discuss/display this information?

  • After this activity, you should have a fairly good idea of what you would like to pursue for S&T #3. I strongly suggest that you begin drafting your oral presentation now, and make sure to practice it at least once.
