Today we are going to have a little chat regarding your HIST 1301 focus for FYS. We will also spend a bit of time discussing the differences between credible and scholarly sources, along with the best ways to find them. We will wrap things up with a bit of a chronology review...or should I say...you will be making the chronology review. Yeah, that seems more accurate.

Reminders
Registration 101: You should be meeting with your advisors, clearing holds, and planning tentative schedules.
The schedule is live on SAIL.
Use Degree Planner to help fill out this tentative schedule that your advisor can look over.
This link can help you decide what Learning Community you wish to be a part of next semester.
Your next reading quiz is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 24th and will cover reading 3.10 in Annual Editions "Mexico's Irish Army"
For this quiz, you are allowed to bring one 3X5 notecard with writing on one side only.
Don't forget to update ALL portions of this file no later than Friday at midnight.
If you notice, I am trying to leave comments/hints in the right-hand column. Use these to help guide your research.
If they don't make sense, come see me during office hours. I am holding a special IA #2 office hour on Friday from 12:00-1:00!
I will be spending the weekend creating groups based on this file, so all information should be at its most current.
Professor Walker's Discovery Log #8 is due on Sunday.
This is directly linked to the work you are doing on IA #2. Make sure to complete it to the best of your ability. Again, the focus here should be on credible and/or scholarly sources.
Exam 2 Countdown!
The review has been distributed. As of today, you can officially answer three of the four essay questions!
When is that exam happening??

Sharing is Caring (IA #2)
Who is still in crisis regarding your HIST 1301 focus for IA #2?
Don't be shy...we can help!
HIST 1301 Themes
The overarching themes under which you will all be grouped are as follows: citizenship, war, power and oppression, resistance and revolt, equality, liberty, order, the power of writing.
They come directly from Dr. Wooster's syllabus
You will find out who your group members are on Monday. Be prepared to chat during class and arrange for your first meeting time outside of class.
APA Research (IA 2 and Intersections Project)
While conducting general research, consumer sites are acceptable, but as you move forward with your researching and writing processes, you should shift your focus towards using scholarly and credible sources.
Evaluating Sources
This link takes you to one of the parts of our Research Guide. This portion talks about evaluative sources.
Credible vs. Scholarly
Credible implies that the article is well researched and relatively unbiased.
You can help determine the credibility of a source by using the The CRAAP Test.
You can find many different types of credible sources online, but it is important to review them to make sure you are getting legitimate information.
Scholarly implies that the article is for use within an academic field and has been peer-reviewed by other scholars with expertise on the subject.
When Dr. Wooster publishes a scholarly article in an academic journal, it is peer-reviewed by other Historians.
One way of limiting your online search to scholarly sources only, is to select the "peer-reviewed" limiter on your document search in the library databased.
Why should you care?
Research and knowledge has value...you have done some reading about that, yeah?
Proof of labor. The quality of your sources can literally SHOW your audience the amount of work you put into a project.
Huh, audience, also a kind of important concept.
Chronologies (HIST 1301)
Go ahead and break into groups of three-four and get out your lecture notes.
Each group will receive a random subheading from the Exam Review.
Your responsibility is to create the long-form (more than three events/people/places) chronology and post it on the Google .doc.
Remember how things appeared on the last exam. All chronologies are directly from your lecture notes.
Also, remember there are often cause-effect connections between the listed items.
Homework
Use the homework activity that you completed for today, and produce a detailed outline for Essay Question 2.
All the information on that worksheet is relevant to the second question. In addition, review your notes and the connected readings.
Remember the things that you did well on for the first exam...do those things!
Remember the things that you had trouble with...fix those things!
Submit your outline to BB in the appropriate Daily Work space.
If you have not submitted your entry to the FYS Spreadsheet, you must do so no later than Friday at midnight! This is urgent.
