"Willkommen. Bienvenue. Welcome. Come on in." Let's do this. Today we are introducing the course website and Blackboard addition, and starting with some of our very first writing of the semester. Be prepared to work today.

Perspective is important. (Spelling is also important.)
Reminders
Are you in the right space?!
ENGL 1302.210
Anyone else...you are lost. Commence panic.
I will not read the syllabus to you. My expectation is that you review this document outside of our class and are familiar with the policies therein.
If you do not do this, it will come back to haunt you. This is not like an iTunes update. You need to know what you are agreeing to as a student in this course.

Today
Icebreaker. Let's rip this bandaid off, shall we?
Stand up. Say your preferred name. Say one interesting thing about yourself that isn't your major. We will all feel slightly awkward together, and that my students, is team building.
Welcome to Writing and Rhetoric.
All of you are education majors. SOME of you are also part of LC ED, which is an education dyad with an emphasis on the theme Education in a Democracy.
Though there are no shared assignments between these course, if you are working "smart"...research that you do for this course could very easily translate into work that you produce in your LC courses.
A word of warning: NEVER use one assignment for more than one course without permission from your instructors. That is actually a form of plagiarism and can result in serious academic consequences.
Website, Blackboard, and Google Drive
The class plans will be available on this website. They will stay available for the entire semester. If you are going to miss class...CHECK THE PLANS!
You can also access the website through BB.
Blackboard will contain major assignment descriptions, random online daily work activities, etc. It is important that you access BB regularly.
Your average will be available to you on BB throughout the entire semester. If you have a question or are uncertain about anything, it is your responsibility to act.
Google Drive
If you don't have a gmail account, then you need to create one.
You will create a single folder that you will "share" with me. This single folder should have the following sub-folders inside of it:
Discovery Blog
Google Doc Dialogues
Research Proposal/Intersections Project
Portfolio
Other
By sharing this with me, I will have access to all the materials you are working on for the entire semester.
Breakout Session!
Get out a sheet of notebook paper. Take 10 minutes to jot down some answers to the following questions. Answer however you like, but be sure you have touched on all the
prompts.
What was the last book/article/poem that you read? What emotion do you associate with this text? Happiness, sadness, blinding rage, etc?
Other than class assignments, what previous writing experience do you have? This can be fiction or nonfiction. Music, lyrics, comics, newspaper...?
How do you anticipate your experiences with reading/writing to change as you enter the university?
In your groups, please discuss the prompts above. You don't have to share everything you wrote, but be sure to contribute to the conversation.
Sharing is caring! Let's talk as a class.
Homework
First-Year Selfie
Take a selfie of yourself and insert it into a Word document. You should then answer the following questions on the same document. Your responses to questions 2 and 3 should be a bit more substantive than the first question. Remember, you are using writing to provide me with valuable information about you, so this means evidence and explanations are expected.
Q1: What is your preferred name? If you have a nickname or like to go by your middle name...whatever...just make a note of it.
Q2: What skills are you most confident about as a student? Are you a great writer or public speaker? Can you note-take with the best of them #colorcodeordie? What are you bringing to the table?
Q3: What are you most concerned about as your transition into your first semester? This could be something academic or a bit more personal. How do you plan to conquer those fears?
For submission purposes, you can do this on a standard Word doc. and submit it to BB, or you can create this in Google Drive and submit a shared link to BB.
I don't really care which method you choose, but understand that you will need to work with Google docs sooner rather than later.
Submitting the link for your "shared" Google folder
